In memory of Prof. Joseph Maciariello
Our Drucker Lab Research Director, Prof. Joseph Maciariello peacefully passed away on July 1st 2020 in Claremont, California, USA, with his family at his side. In memory of Prof. Maciariello, we hosted the online memorial service of Prof. Maciariello on July 20th (Monday) with the support of Dr. Stephen Lee, the Pastor of Saddleback Church Hong Kong. It was attended by the beloved family of Prof. Maciariello, Mrs. Judy Maciariello and their son Patrick Maciariello, fellow colleagues, students and members of DAHK, where we pay our last respects to Prof. Maciariello together.
Mr. Shao Ming Lo, Chairman of Bright China Group and the Founder of Peter F. Drucker Academy, and close-friend of Prof. Maciariello, shared with us the unforgettable precious moments they had together. Mr. Shao was enormously inspired by Prof. Maciariello’s passion, and whole-hearted dedication to the development of Management as a Liberal Art in the Mainland China and Hong Kong. During Prof. Maciariello’ s trip to China a decade ago, he insisted to attend all of the Drucker Forums being held in various Chinese cities within a few day time, even though his body had fallen sick, Prof. Maciariello was determined to participate, and actively interacted with learning partners in China. His dedication and commitments are very impressive and well-respected.
Dr. Darwin Chen, the Chairman of MLA Foundation, delivered eulogy at the memorial service. Dr. Chen mentioned that Drucker came up with the concept of Management as a Liberal Art, and envision achieving a functioning society through good management practice; nevertheless, Drucker didn’t systematically develop MLA teachings. “Prof. Maciariello devoted himself to the study of the huge body of knowledge on Drucker, and made the teaching of Management as a Liberal Art a practical project”, whilst in collaboration with the Peter F. Drucker Academy Hong Kong, Prof. Maciariello personally led the “Train the Trainer”(TTT) courses in the past few years, which is very unforgettable.
Dr. Ricky Szeto, the Executive Director of Hung Fook Tong Group Holdings Limited, and Dr. Cecilia Tsui, both are graduates of MLA TTT program. They felt privileged and honored to be mentored by Prof. Maciariello, and conveyed their sincerest condolences to his family.
The memorial service ended with by the eulogy delivered by Dr. Julia Wang, President of Peter F. Drucker Academy, who attended Prof. Maciariello’s TTT class at early 2016, and since then she had been working closely with Prof. Maciariello to build the framework and contents of the MLA Leadership program for Hong Kong, “With his great efforts, today our MLA Leadership Program has been updated to an advanced level. His contribution in helping us to sustain our mission going forward is invaluable.” We highly appreciate and thank him for his great contribution to Peter F. Peter F. Drucker Academy joins hands with Centennial College on presenting the Enterprise Management Radio Program “Management as a Liberal Art”, and it is on air from 9pm-10pm every Sunday night.
We are honored to have management expert, Dr. Royce Yuen, and Vice-President of a multinational corporation, Ms. Ruthia Wong, as our guest hosts for the program. Each episode we would invite an outstanding senior executive and prominent figure from different fields in Hong Kong to be our guest speaker, who will share with us on their ups-and-downs in their remarkable careers, and how they deal with the ever-changing market environment.
This week we have Board Chairman of Peter F. Drucker Academy, Dr. Darwin Chen, as our guest speaker. Over the course of 40-years career, Dr. Darwin Chen had been leading various governmental departments, and participated in the Sino-British negotiations over Hong Kong’s returns to China in the 80’s. As early as the 1970s, Dr. Chen has introduced and applied Drucker’s management practice into the Hong Kong government body.
Drucker’s concept of “Management as a Liberal Art”, is built on the “People-Oriented” management approach, which emphasizes that a true leader must obtain recognition and trust from all stakeholders, whilst adjust the mission and strategy along with the social change.
Drucker’s management philosophy helps Dr. Chen make effective decisions when managing both governmental and NGO organizations; which drives him to advocate the Drucker’s practice of management as a liberal art to the community, so as to actualize Drucker’s vision of creating a sustainable and healthy society through management.
